Costa Rica’s economy emerged from recession in 1997 and has since shown strong growth. After a growth of 6.2 in 1998, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased to 8.3 in 1999, led by exports of free zones and tourism, now the main source of revenue for the country. The Central Bank of Costa Rica gives nearly half the growth from 1999 to the production of the factory assembly of Intel Corporation in the country since 1997. Inflation, as measured by the consumer price index (CPI) was 13.9 in 2004.
